Mason had an idea of where to go, and fortunately his destination was only three blocks away. He quickly walked over to Rue Princesse, the street on which Castel, a high-end nightclub he and Hans frequented when they both lived in Paris, was located. It was known as the place where the beautiful people went, especially pretty women. His problem was that he was low on cash and not particularly well-dressed. He was going to need to walk up to the door with a very attractive young lady, or ladies, to have any chance of getting in on a Friday night.
He waited at the northern end of the street in front of a café, pretending to be reading the menu on the outside of the window. He didnât have to wait long. Coming around the corner were three extremely good-looking French mesdemoiselles in their mid-twenties, all three of them dressed in very short skirts with low-cut tops. He had about eighty meters of runway between where they were passing him and the front door to Castel. Somehow, he needed to convince them to take him into Castel as part of their group.
He also needed to be on his game with his French tonight. As far as anyone else in Paris was concerned, he was not an American wanted for terrorism. He was a Frenchman from a small village in Bourgogne, he decided. It would explain why his accent was a bit different than the Parisian accent. And he knew a fair bit about the wine that came from that region, so he at least had something to talk briefly about to authenticate his story. His gamble was that no one he was going to meet tonight was actually from Bourgogne.
Just as they passed where he was standing, he pretended to be heading out in the street on his own, without looking at them, and started walking in-step with them. After a few steps in sync, he looked up as if he had just noticed them. By the grace of God, the one walking closest to him looked back at him and smiled. He smiled back and continued to walk in stride as if he was with them, yet still ignoring them, saying nothing. He finally looked over again and they both started to laugh.
âVous allez chez Castel?â Mason said.
âOui,â she replied. After a few more steps, he was almost out of runway.
âBon, alors, on y va ensemble?â
To which she replied, âPourquoi pas!?â
No cheesy pickup line. He simply asked if they were going to Castel, and when she replied that they were, he suggested they go together. She agreed and that was it. Sometimes the best approach is the soft sell. The bouncer saw the ratioâthree hot women, and one guy with them. The math worked. He was in.
Mason was trying to conserve what few euros he had left in his wallet. He had British pounds but only about eighty euro left, and no way to get more. He wasnât drinking much, because he couldnât afford to.
